28.11.2023

The Austrian Treasury (OeBFA) has been responsible for the debt portfolio and liquidity management of the Republic of Austria since 1993. Over the past three decades, the OeBFA has managed a payment volume of around EUR 7,700 billion, and in the same period the financial debt portfolio under management has more than tripled from EUR 80 billion at the beginning of 1993 to around EUR 277 billion (at the end of October 2023). Austrian taxpayers have been well served, as the Austrian Treasury has saved a total of around EUR 3.3 billion in financing costs by providing financing for federal states (since 2000) and other federal legal entities (since 1997) alone.

Managing Directors of the Austrian Treasury, Markus Stix and Walter Jöstl, looked back on these and numerous other successes in a roundtable discussion with founding Managing Director Helmut Eder at a high-profile anniversary celebration on 27 November 2023 in the MuseumsQuartier Vienna.

The Austrian Treasury also received numerous congratulations from all over the world to mark its anniversary. In addition to the Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn, international experts not only congratulated the OeBFA on its anniversary but also emphasised the high regard in which Austria is held on the international financial markets. Among the congratulators were Tammo Diemer (Managing Director of the German Finance Agency), Grahame Johnson (Chairman of the OECD Working Party on Debt Management) and Sir Robert Stheeman (Chief Executive Officer, UK Debt Management Office).

Further details can be found in the press release (in German only).
